[Co:beliefs]

Commonality of Beliefs [Co:beliefs], is an interactive digital installation that delves into the intriguing world of superstitions through immersive real-world experiences; exploring their role in fostering cultural cohesion, and examining the persistence and relevance of superstitious thinking in modern society.  This digital immersion offers an opportunity for meaningful interaction among individuals and communities with similar beliefs and presents a fresh perspective on how superstitions are formed; expounding on the emotions people harbour in the digital realm, especially those related to uncertain futures.

Our journey began with a simple question: "Why do people still believe in superstitions?" This question piqued our curiosity and led us to delve into the narratives of superstitious thinking that exist today. The research has been brought together in a VR experience and a 360 film produced in a narrative game environment, that visually and artistically express the anxieties and fears of modern people through three realms.

By rendering these complex emotions experienced in an uncertain world through digital media, we make them more palpable.

Realm 1 : Fear of Uncertainty  (VR)

Superstitions can provide a sense of stability in uncertain situations and alleviate fear of the unknown.

The scattered lanterns and fireflies illuminates the area with life, providing a sense of comfort to the mind and bringing clarity to the unknown. This reaction is a figurative response to how beliefs and superstitions can provide a sense of stability and alleviate fear; a response to modern society's state of flux.

Realm 2 : Hope and Reassurance  (VR)

People often seek to control their fate or outcomes. Believing in superstitions can give the illusion of control by suggesting that certain actions or objects can manipulate luck.

Stone stacking is an important superstitious practice for finding hope and reassurance, helping people in modern society manage uncertainty and stress. Integrating this into a digital immersive environment, the project provides users with psychological stability and emotional connection, contributing to the exploration of the contemporary significance of superstitions.

Realm 3 : Desire for Control  (VR)

Superstitions foster positive expectations and provide hope, even in challenging circumstances. These emotions can contribute to belief in superstitions.

Participating in these rituals offer a peace of mind and a sense of structure. These performances and objects can act as charms to control one's fate and luck; offering a sense of comfort to the otherwise distressing or fulfilling occasions. Furthermore, these rituals enable us to articulate our thoughts and feelings, helping us to recognise the moment of change and navigate the next step.
